Art Contest

The annual MHEA Art Contest for homeschool students took place Friday, August 21, at Great Oaks Church of Christ at 3355 Brunswick Drive in Bartlett. The contest is open to grades K-12, as well as a category for special learners. Art should be dropped off the morning of the contest from 9:30 - 11:30 am. By popular request, from 2:30-3:00 pm, everyone may view the art entries and no art may be picked up until after 3:00 pm. All art and ribbons must be picked up that afternoon between 3:00 - 4:00 pm. Parents, please make sure your children do not touch any of the art exhibited! No one may be present during judging. Judges’ decisions are final. This contest is a preliminary to the School Art competition of the Delta Fair. The top two winning projects from each grade will be eligible for entry into the Delta Fair at the discretion of the judges. Entries displayed at the Delta Fair may be picked up at the MHEA office beginning Wednesday, September 16, during regular office hours. Date and location of the MHEA contest will be published in the July newsletter. For further information, please contact Melanie Smith at ArtContest@MemphisHomeschool.org.

Art Contest Rules

Please read VERY CAREFULLY as there are a number of changes this year. The Mid-South Fair has now re-located to Tunica, Mississippi, so we will be putting our art into the Delta Fair and Music Festival located near the Agricenter. Their rules differ slightly and, unfortunately at this time, there are no categories in the School Art division for 3-D art (sculptures, pottery, etc.) or photography. Please make suggestions to Jan Hamilton (901-487-3075) at the Delta Fair if you would like these categories included in future years. She seems very open to accommodating our requests.

Origin - All entries must be the original works of the students. Artwork must have been completed since September 1, 2008.

Theme -Any theme is acceptable but must be viewable in accordance to family values.

Mounting - All paintings and drawings must be securely mounted on poster board or matted. Matting/poster board cannot extend beyond three inches from the original art. No frames allowed. Maximum size of the artwork, including the poster board/mat is 18 inches by 24 inches.

Identification - On the back of each entry in the upper right corner, record the student’s name, grade, and Memphis Home Education Association, making sure it does not show through to the front. Grade level can be the student’s grade for the 2008-2009 year. Each student may only enter in one grade level.

Entry fee - There will be a $2.00 fee per entry; you must be an MHEA member to participate. Awards will be presented to all participants. Maximum of two entries per student. MHEA can enter a maximum of two pieces per grade (but only 1 entry per student) in the Delta Fair. The entries will be determined at the discretion of the judges. Local homeschoolers can enter this type of artwork in the Delta Fair only through a home school association.
